Identity Theft Infomration
What is identity theft?
Tax identity theft is using someone else’s SSN to get their refund or a job.
What do I do if my identity is stolen?
Go to IdentityTheft.gov for all types of identity theft, including tax related cases. This website helps you fill out the IRS’s identity theft form.
After you report the problem, you will get specific steps to help with other problems the identity theft may have caused.
If you or a tax preparer tries to file your return online, it will not go through if someone has already used your information. If this happens, you have the right to file your return by mail and enclose the IRS identity theft form. The IRS will contact you about next steps, but it may take quite a while as they have a backlog.
How does identity theft happen?
Someone you know has your information; someone gets your information by stealing your wallet or cell phone, from papers you threw in the trash, or by buying it from someone who works at a place that has your information (banks, hotels, hospitals); an online data breach; scammers contacting you; or from you using public wifi.
How do you reduce your risk of identity theft?
Use strong passwords
Don’t give out info without knowing who is asking
Routinely check your bank and credit card statements and credit reports
File taxes early
Watch out for scammers - the real IRS will never call you, text you, ask you to pay for things by crypto currency or gift cards
